Sophie and Mike- Wedding Photography at St James The Elder, Horton and Tortworth Court

Sophie and Mike chose St James The Elder for their wedding celebrations planned less than three months before they were due to tie the knot. Initially planned as a sunny destination wedding in Cuba, plans changed quite close to the date and instead the bride and groom took a pre-wedding honeymoon to Cuba arriving back in the UK just a few days before the ceremony and reception that would have originally been their evening party.

Not quite the sunshine of Cuba on the morning of the 24th July. Sophie was extremely gracious accepting the rather damp weather which stayed with us all day. When it’s a wet day it’s just a case of being a litttle more creative with backdrops and lighting for couple portraits and gives me the opportunity to try things I might not have otherwise. I loved the strong sidelit portraits I did of Sophie and Mike in the doorway of the church and the bounce of the flash used to capture a mirror reflection later in the day.

Sophie really likes natural imagery of guests chatting and mingling to show how the day was in the most honest way. Lovely to be able to capture persepctives of both the bride and groom before the ceremony and funny to shoot lots of guests struggling with umrellas through two very large overgrown bushes in the grounds of the church.

During the church ceremony I was able to slip through a side door and capture images of both the bride walking down the aisle toward me and then from the bell tower later in the ceremony to get a nice angle of the rings and vows. I don’t tend to move during the ceremony as I don’t ever want to distract anyones attention, however the setup of the church was such that during a convenient hymn I manage to discreetly head to the back of the church without anyone noticing me.

After the ceremony we captured the bulk of the immediate family group photos near the altar before dashing ito the rain. I managed to shoot a few quick shots of the new Mr and Mrs Thorn as they headed to their car under a brolly.

On arrival at Tortworth we used the car for another couple of pictures and the impressive backdrop of Tortworth with the newlweds on the steps before we completed the couple portraits inside the restaurant and on the grand staircase.

We then enjoyed an afternoon of laughter, drinks and canapes as I captured imagery of guests enjoying themselves before I headed off and left the happy couple just before they were due to start their evening Barbeque.
